The Starting Place honored Florida State Senator Nan Rich for her outstanding efforts on behalf of those facing substance abuse and mental health issues with the presentation of the inaugural Sheldon Shaffer Memorial Award at its annual breakfast. The award celebrates the life of Mr. Sheldon Shaffer, a founder and the first executive director of The Starting Place, who passed away earlier this year.

The Starting Place honored former Florida State Senator Dave Aronberg and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Broward County Drug Court at its annual fundraising breakfast themed “Unleash Your Potential.”
Aronberg detailed his long-term dedication to establishing a prescription drug data base and Broward County Drug Court Judges Marcia Beach, Melanie May and Gisele Pollack spoke of the importance of Broward County Drug Courts as a diversion program for teens, young adults and adult drug offenders. The Starting Place recently received a $5,000 grant from the Pediatric Associates Foundation to support its Youth Opportunities Program, which provides in-home counseling for low-income, high-risk adolescents aged 12 to 17 with substance abuse and/or mental health issues who have committed a misdemeanor juvenile offense.
The Pediatric Associates Foundation is an independent, charitable organization that raises money to provide grants to charitable organizations and programs that benefit children and youth in South Florida. The Starting Place attracted 150 guests and raised $20,000 at its “Dive into Recovery” annual breakfast honoring Pat Kramer, a tireless advocate for those dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues.
